Sometimes it take takes tragedy and hitting rock bottom to put our lives into perspective so we wake up and make necessary changes. Things that we know we should do but don’t do out of fear, doubt and procrastination. It may look like an unfavorable diagnosis, a breakup or a 911 call. We hesitate and put off the important things: getting healthy, cleaning up our diet, spending time with family, investing in strong relationships, starting the business, repairing credit, getting out of the toxic relationship, fixing the car. We get desperate and wait until we are backed into a corner after having ignored the many nudges and warning signs.
Then change comes knocking, uncomfortable, unwelcome but necessary. It’s the precursor for growth and removes what’s comfortable and familiar, and is often inconvenient. It’s change! But what if, instead of meeting change with rebuke and pushing against it, we welcome change and make it work for our benefit? If it’s going to happen then we might as well swim with the current rather than go against it and get tired and worn out. And what if… you decided to change before you absolutely had no choice? What if you gave yourself the chance to choose change?
In a few months, January 1st will be the beginning of most people’s years but your year can begin whenever you decide and today – October 1st, is a good day to start a new year! It is a good time because there’s no resolution pressure or expectation to set goals because everyone else is doing it. October is so off the beaten path that you get to really think about your 2019 so far, and the next three months to close it out. There’s still plenty of time to get some things done. If you decide. If you take some serious intentional action – a lot can happen for you by the end of 2019. Decide!
Here’s how to get to your goal by October 31st:
- Write out some goals for yourself that you want to achieve by the end of October.
- Then, break that down into each week in October. What would you want to achieve by the end of October?
- Write out what you would need to do to achieve it/ them by the first week, second week, third week and the final week. Breaking it down and having small weekly targets puts the goal into perspective and helps you take action toward it every week. It keeps your mind actively preoccupied with taking the next step towards getting to the bigger goal.
- Execute by taking action! You have to do it, scared and all. Check in on your progress every Wednesday. Wednesday gives you a good gauge to see how far you’ve gotten and what you still need to do before the end of the week.
So, what can October 31st look like for you? Your business goals, reading goals, fitness goals, healthy eating goals, relationship goals, resume building goals, personal development goals, travel goals? You’ve got thirty days from now; four weeks to execute the mini actions to get you to the big goal/s. Decide what the end looks like and work backwards. Be clear on what you want, define it and break it down into the steps. Remember, if you choose to be proactive and get a head start on change you don’t have to wait for rock bottom or desperate circumstances to get you there. Put yourself in the driver’s seat!
Go get October girl!
