Berries are one of the healthiest foods to add to your plate. They are a great snack in between meals and they can be the perfect topping on your oatmeal, porridge and pudding. We love that there are a few varieties of berries like strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, boysenberries and elderberries. They all carry similar health benefits like fiber, vitamins and antioxidants. But what if you only choose one, which berries would you get? From the title, you might have guessed. Yes, get the blueberries!
Blueberries, in particular, have a reputation for being a bit more expensive at the grocery store but for good reason. These little dark blue/purple dynamos are loaded with nutrients, vitamins and minerals. And by loaded we mean:
- Fiber (for digestion)
- Potassium (for blood pressure stabilization)
- Folate (needed for creating red and white blood vessels)
- Vitamin C (for all things immunity)
- Vitamin K (to ensure proper clotting of blood)
- Vitamin B6 (to balance hormones)
- Phytonutrients and antioxidants (to protect from free radicals)
Those are just a few benefits of blueberries; others include aiding in cancer prevention, diabetes and weight management, brain-heart-skin-bone health as well as helping in the lowering of blood pressure. So, if you could only choose one, get the blueberries.
Quick tip
Choose fresh over frozen as frozen blueberries have been shown to lose their nutritional value over time.
