Quinoa – Keen~wah
Quinoa is one of those foods that satisfies most people, whether you eat to live or you live to eat. It originates out of South America and is often referred to as a grain, but is technically a seed that grows out of a plant. There’s an ongoing debate to prove whether quinoa is a seed or a grain, partly because it behaves like both. It sprouts when soaked and it can also replace your breakfast cereal. It’s nutritional profile is just one of the reasons Quinoa is a powerhouse food.
When we say Quinoa, you say protein! Quinoa. Protein! Quinoa. Protein! Yes ladies, Quinoa is a complete protein filled with all nine amino acids. Protein is one of the foundational building blocks of strong bones, muscles, organs, cartilage and blood. It is necessary for building cells, repairing tissue and for the formation of fresh skin, hair and nails. That’s why we love Quinoa and since it is plant based — it’s all inclusive, it’s for everyone. The goodness doesn’t just stop there though — oh no! Quinoa has fiber and carbs and a beautiful nutritional profile that ranks it low on the glycemic index which means that when you eat it you’ll feel fuller longer. This also means that it doesn’t spike blood sugar levels like simple sugars {cookies, cakes, sweets} would.
With a similar consistency, Quinoa is a good substitute for rice. It cooks just like rice does and fluffs up just like rice. It can replace rice on your plate especially since it tastes quite the same minus the high carbohydrate content. The texture of Quinoa provides satiation that helps keep cravings at bay longer. To make a breakfast porridge, boil the quinoa just like you would rice and at the very very end pour in your favorite almond or oat milk then add agave syrup or honey to sweeten! It’s quick, simple and packed with protein!
